DMS Behavior Plan
The DMS Behavior Plan is a guide for teachers to utilize in addressing minor disciplinary infractions of the Code of Conduct. When used properly, this plan can assist students in managing their behavior and give them clear expectations and consequences for their decisions.
Step 1 – Warning and documentation in school-wide database - No parent contact. This allows the student the opportunity to correct the behavior themselves prior to parental involvement. Step 1 is the only step where parents will not be contacted.
Step 2 – Teacher-led conference with student (DMS behavior Plan is reviewed with student and consequences for future infractions are explained). The teacher who assigns the step is responsible for contacting the parents of the student. This can be done either through email or phone call.
Step 3 - 1 hour teacher detention assigned. The teacher who assigns the step is responsible for contacting the parents of the student and for emailing the grade level clerk the name of the student as well as the date of the detention. This can be done either through email or phone call. One teacher is assigned each week to hold detention in their room from 8-9 A.M. If a student misses an assigned detention, it can be reassigned one time. If the student fails to attend a 2nd time, the student is given a disciplinary referral to the grade level administrator. Student may be referred to the grade level counselor for intervention if team feels that it is appropriate.
Step 4 - 1 hour teacher detention and referral to the grade level counselor. The teacher who assigns the step is to schedule a parent conference, either in person or by phone, with the team and connection teachers who assigned any steps.
Step 5 - Disciplinary referral to administrator and parent conference if needed. The parent conference is strongly suggested. Teacher should contact parent prior to administrative action.
Subsequent infractions after step 5 would result in a disciplinary referral to the administrator. Steps in academic and connections classes are combined for each individual student.
Students who have reached step 5 or beyond will not be allowed to attend any extra- curricular activity (social, club, sports) unless the student has had 30 consecutive days of appropriate behavior prior to the day of the event.
